Our Specialties
Radiation Oncology
The Department of Radiation Oncology includes radiation, oncology and neurosurgery specialists, medical physicists, dosimetrists, nurses and support staff who are committed to providing the highest quality patient care to patients with cancer. As part of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, the department utilizes state of the art technologies in the treatment of cancer and in advanced cancer research.
The department is led by Theodore DeWeese, M.D., a world-renowned leader in the study of urologic malignancies who is known for his translation of gene therapy concepts from the laboratory to the bedside. He and his collaborators were the first to use a prostate-specific adenovirus for the treatment of prostate cancer in humans. His research currently focuses on ways to deliver radiation more accurately. Molecular techniques are already being used in nuclear medicine, for example, to protect normal tissue function while irradiating the patient.
